Estonian literature is, you know, several times longer, bigger, and more thrilling than a century can hold, stretching over folklore and folk songs to the unrecallable dimness of millennia in the past and, hopefully, at least to the same extent in the future. Considering such time perspective, a hundred years of statehood marks and means a single and, moreover, exactly the present moment. But on the scale of a human life, the last hundred years contains several generations, ways of writing and talking, and quite a variegated and devious period in history.
The present exhibition attempts to provide an overview of this period by the means of literature, language, and changing world of thought, as well as by books as physical objects. Especially today, when there are immeasurable other ways and means of delivering information (as well as focusing one’s mind and entertaining oneself) than a paper book, then the old form offers ample pleasure of recognition and reminds that, in more than several cases, the form complements the content in several ways. The feeling and experience of one or another work are formed by the interaction of several factors and the classical book has managed to bear these characteristics for long centuries
The books originate from the collections of the National Library of Estonia, and the works of art from the collections of the Art Museum of Estonia and Tartu Art Museum.
