902 ideas submitted to young inventors’ competition Published: 31.10.2016

The ‘Estonian Inventor’ competition organised by the Estonian Research Council attracted a total of 902 ideas submitted by 932 young inventors from more than 100 schools in Estonia and 2 schools abroad.  In cooperation with Estonian National Broadcasting, short documentaries will be made of the 40 best 6 to 12-year-old inventors who will take part in the competition, in honour of Estonia’s upcoming centenary.

A total of 25 950 euros in prize money will be awarded and Estonia will select its representatives to the world’s largest fair for young scientists, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held each year in the United States. The competition is divided into three age categories: preschoolers to 4th graders, 5th to 9th graders and upper secondary and vocational students. The jury will consist of a wide range of professionals, including engineers, designers, inventors and patent agents.

The award ceremony will be held on 6 December in the Tallinn University of Technology Innovation and Business Centre Mektory. The newly-elected President of Estonia, Kersti Kaljulaid, will present the national awards, while special awards will be given by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, the Embassy of the United States of America, the Embassy of Denmark, the Estonian Patent Office, the World Intellectual Property Organisation WIPO, Tallinn University of Technology Innovation and Business Centre Mektory, the Energy Discovery Centre and Science Centre AHHAA.
