The Baltic way was a unique peaceful demonstration which, on 23 August 1989, recalled the 50th anniversary of the non-aggression agreement concluded between the Soviet Union and Germany (also known as the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact) and its secret protocol. More than a million people stood hand-in-hand in the more than 600-kilometre-long human chain that permeated the three Baltic states and symbolised Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania's aspirations for freedom and ending the Soviet occupation.
