Estonia 100: competition for reworked folk music Finished

The Pärnu County Folk Culture Association (Pärnumaa Rahvakultuuri Keskselts or PRAKS) has opened a competition inviting musicians and composers to rework traditional folk music. The aim of the competition is to create new and innovative compositions which are inspired by or based on instrumental melodies, songs or children’s folksongs that originate from Pärnu County.

Songs submitted to the competition ''Saja-aastane öö'' (''A Hundred-Year-Old Night'') may not be published before 19 August 2018. By participating in the competition, the author of the song or arrangement allows to use it as the music for a folk dance, and also to publish it without any additional payment during the process. Each song submitted to the competition must be accompanied by a reference to the particular source from Pärnumaa. Some sources can be found here: and here:

The deadline for submissions that are recorded in high quality (studio recording) is 1 October 2016.  Submissions can be sent by e-mail to or on a memory stick or CD by mail to Pärnumaa Rahvakultuuri Keskselts, Akadeemia 2, 80010 Pärnu (please mark ''Saja-aastane öö'' on the envelope). The contact information of the author must also be included (mobile phone number and e-mail address.)

The songs will be evaluated by a panel of judges composed of musicians, choreographers and the competition’s artistic team.

First prize 1000 €;
Second prize 700 €;
Third prize 500 €.
The jury reserves the right to give out special prizes.
The songs submitted will be accessible to choreographers for a folk dance competition. New Estonian folk dances will be choreographed to the best songs, of which a selection will be made for the final concert. A concert will take place on 13 May 2017 in Pärnu where the songs and dances by folk dance groups will be performed. Songs submitted to the competition must be recorded in a version that can be reproduced in a live performance.

The winners of the competition will be announced at the concert!
