The National Male Choir will be celebrating Estonia’s 100th anniversary with concerts in Dresden, Germany. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 and a cappella programme.

The Estonian National Male Choir will be performing a cappella music and a major musical piece at the modern and acoustically renowned concert hall of the Dresden Palace of Culture (Kulturpalast) on 11 and 13 February 2018. The first half of the 11 February concert will include compositions written for a male choir by Arvo Pärt, James MacMillan and Max Reger, performed by the Estonian National Male Choir (principal conductor Mikk Üleoja). The programme includes Arvo Pärt’s “De profundis” (“From the depths”), written for a male choir, organ, and bass drum to lyrics from Psalm 130, as well as Scottish composer James Macmillan’s motet “…here in hiding…”, which was written in 1993 and will now be performed by a 19-member coro piccolo. This composition includes the original Latin text of the Gregorian hymn “Adoro te devote” intermittently with Gerard Manley Hopkins’ English translations. “…here in hiding…” premiered in October 1993 in Glasgow in the performance of the Hillard Ensemble. The concert’s first half will end with Max Reger’s “Requiem”, written in 1912 as part of his cycle “10 Songs for Male Chorus”, Op. 83. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 in B minor, Op. 113, also known as “Babi Yar”, written in 1962 for bass, male choir, and orchestra, will be performed during the second half of the concert. This composition was written to the poems of Yevgeny Yevtushenko, and its first movement is based on a poem of the same name. The symphony will be performed by the Estonian National Male Choir, the Dresden Philharmonic, soloist Mikhail Petrenko and conductor Michael Sanderling. This symphony will also be performed on 13 February at the commemoration concert devoted to the bombing of Dresden (1945). After the concert, the piece will also be recorded in this composition.
