Imagine a powerful “green wave” starting in New Zealand and ending in Hawaii, with hundreds of millions of people taking positive action together on the very same day. We aim to unite the global community, raise awareness and implement true change to achieve our final goal – a clean and healthy planet.

The initiator of World Cleanup Day – Let’s Do It Foundation is a global civic movement with a mission to connect and empower people and organizations around the world for a clean planet. Already 20M caring people have joined the movement, cleaning up more than 500 000 tonnes of garbage in over 100 countries, saving lives, improving health & reducing costs.

Take action now wherever you are! Through the actions you take in your local community you can make an impact, making the world a cleaner and better place.

Perhaps the single most important thing we can do to get rid of illegal garbage is to know where it is. Picking up litter on your own is great, and we encourage you to do it every time you see it.

But the amount of garbage we deal with necessitates a coordinated plan of attack. To really clean up that much trash, we need a plan to get rid of it efficiently.

This is why we invite you to help create the ugliest map ever – a world map where all illegal dump sites and trash piles have been mapped. Let’s do it World organization in cooperation with QUALITANCE and the help of hundreds of volunteers around the world have created and launched a new trash mapping app – World Cleanup, available for Android and iPhone. Download the app and let’s start mapping!

With today’s technology, it’s easy. All you need is a smartphone and the ability to download a free app. During mapping, you don’t even need reception. Once the location of the garbage is mapped, it will be possible for us to see the locations, type, and size of the most troubling dumping areas around the world, allowing us to focus our efforts on areas overwhelmed by illegal garbage.

Getting an exact measurement of how much waste has ended up in nature is difficult. The very fact that nobody knows it is already a problem on its own.

What we do know is that out of the 1.6 - 2,0 billion tons of household waste generated per year in the world, only about 258 - 368 million tonnes of trash end up in one of the 50 largest dumpsites. Where is the rest of it? It is dumped into rivers, leaks into the oceans, burnt openly or left in the streets and the byways of townships and cities. Every year 8 million tonnes of garbage leaks to our oceans, 80% of it from mainland waste. That’s like dumping over 112,123 Boeing 737- ER900 airplanes into the ocean...each year! 3,5 billions of people don't have access to waste management system.

The problem connected to trash dumped on the streets or in nature is not just an esthetical one. As trash begins to decompose, harmful chemicals and toxins begin to leak out. First, into the soil, then it spreads into the water and air – the very things we all depend on for a healthy life. Dirty drinking water, spreading diseases, red-flag air pollution days... these are all related in some ways to the waste we produce.

Waste is a worldwide problem. There are countless stories of the negative impacts of trash around the world. In short, we care about trash because... we can’t afford not to.

The Let’s Do It Foundation wishes to thank the individuals, corporations, foundations and governments around the world, who support and fund our activities. We are open for growing the network of partners for the clean world. All your questions and ideas regarding partnerships are welcome and can be forwarded to partners@letsdoitworld.org.
