Bassist Peedu Kass’ Momentum ensemble will be performing on the stage of the famous Flagey center in Brussels in September to present the audience a new chapter from the cultural programme dedicated to the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and to the celebration of a hundred years of the Republic of Estonia. The musical group will be performing at the mini festival B-EST Jazz Fest 2017 created especially for the cooperation of Estonian and Belgian musicians. In addition to Peedu Kass’ ensemble, the saxophonist and composer Maria Faust with her group Maria Faust Sacrum Facere will hold a concert in Brussels as well.
Jazz musician Peedu Kass was happy to surprise people with something unusual. “It is very rare to hear a contrabass playing on its own,” said Kass after today’s concert. This lunch concert was the second time during his long music career when he has let the contrabass be alone in the spotlight.
Supported by the Estonian Jazz Union and festival Jazzkaar, the Estonian jazz musicians will also give introductory concerts in Belgium, the United Kingdom, Finland and Germany. Jorma Sarv, the head of the international programme of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and Estonia 100, says that a growing interest in the local jazz music has made the international programme much more diverse. “The Estonian art music has established itself on the big world stages for a long time. While drawing up the programme it became clear that there is a growing interest in the jazz artists as well. As a nice affirmation there have been invitations from famous concert organisers and festivals, some of which will be a first time experience for the Estonian musicians,” says Sarv.
The lunch concert series brings the music of artists giving concerts abroad under the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and Estonia 100 to the home audience. The first lunch concert was held by Trad.Attack! in Tallinn Airport on 10 July and the chamber choir Collegium Musicale surprised the visitors of Balti Station Market in early August.
The international programme made to celebrate the first Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the 100th birthday of the Republic of Estonia gives Estonia an opportunity to show the best part of its culture, science, enterprises and digital innovation in cooperation with international partners. There will be more than 150 concerts in over thirty countries. During a year and a half, many Estonian top performers will take part of the programme, including theatre NO99, Art Museum Kumu, Paavo Järvi and the Estonian Festival Orchestra, skateboard and BMX festival Simple Session, architects, musicians, filmmakers, artists, universities etc.
The website for the international programme is events.estonia.ee and all public events held in foreign countries are welcome in the programme. This lunch concert was organised with the help of cafe Kivi Paber Käärid, Jazzkaar and the Estonian Jazz Union.
