Estonia 100 oaks | EV100

Through the ages, the oak has been the holy tree for the Estonians, involving several legends, rituals and beliefs. Thanks to the longevity of oaks, our stories and dreams are carried from generation to generation over the years. The oak is a symbol of strength and continuity, which makes it well-suited for valuing the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia.

The oak can be planted in home yard, ancestral country house or the oak park to be established together with the community. All over Estonia, parks of 100 oaks are currently being established, each having at least a hundred oaks. The establishment of Estonia’s 100-oak parks began already in autumn 2013, when school children gathered acorns and planted them to grow trees. The trees will be planted in Estonia’s 100-oak parks together at the beginning of summer 2018.

Most of the counties have already selected the locations for the oak parks. The local governments will be responsible for their establishment and subsequent maintenance.
The representational oak forest of Estonia’s 100 oaks will be planted in Tamsalu. This site is partly special for its magical name as well as its location – Tamsalu is situated in the middle of Estonia and one can even take a train to access the park to be established.

Instructions for planting an oak can be found on the website of Estonia’s 100 oaks. The establishment of oak forests will be supported by the foresters from the nearest RMK forest district, the Ministry of the Environment and landscape architects for the Union of Estonian Architects.
