Tour of the Estonian National Male Choir and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra in China and Hong Kong | EV100

In March 2018, the Estonian National Male Choir and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra will perform in China and Hong Kong. The main piece of the tour is Jean Sibelius’ ‘Kullervo’ with text from The Kalevala, which will be performed in both continental China and Hong Kong. Along with our representative collectives, mezzosoprano Monika-Evelin Liiv and baritone Rauno Elp (Estonian National Opera) will be performing as Kullervo’s sister and Kullervo, respectively; the piece will be conducted by Leif Segestram. The destinations of the tour include many places, covering the capital Beijing in the central part of China, coastal cities Shenzhen and Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, the musicians will perform at the closing show of the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the local male choir will join in on the performance of Richard Wagner’s ‘Das Liebesmahl der Apostel’ (‘The Feast of Pentecost’). At the beginning of the trip, they will co-operate with another local collective: in Suzhou, ‘Kullervo’ will be performed by the National Male Choir, soloists, and the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra. In addition to Sibelius’ magnum opus, a selection of Estonian music (Tubin, Tormis, Pärt) and opera choruses by Wagner and Gounod will be performed. The National Male Choir will also perform a cappella concerts under the direction of Chief Conductor Mikk Üleoja. For the Estonian National Male Choir, this will be the third time playing for the Chinese audience. They first visited Shanghai and Beijing in October 2015 with Schönberg’s ‘Gurrelieder’ (‘Songs of Gurre’) and a cappella performances. The most recent visit was in the spring of 2017, when they performed Peeter Vähi’s oratorio ‘Müstilisel Kaydara-maal’ (‘In the Mystical Land of Kaydara’). ERSO performed five concerts in China’s famous concert halls in December 2016.
