“We have always harnessed a great inner power, even in the darkest and most difficult times,” President of the Republic of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid has said of this serendipitous moment in her country’s history.” To become masters of our own homes, our own country.” The purpose of this exhibition, “Masters of Our Own Homes: Estonia at 100” is to commemorate a century since the founding of the Republic of Estonia. It is also to introduce its history, culture, innovation, and, most of all, its people, to the wider world.

The exhibition will be displayed at Stanford University from May 31 – June 6 with its official opening ceremony taking place on June 2. The opening event will feature a roundtable “No Boundaries: An Oral History Project about Estonia’s Transformation in the Digital Age,” in which Sten Tamkivi, Ott Kaukver, Rainer Sternfeld, Andrus Viirg, and Toomas Hendrik Ilves discuss Estonian innovation, identity, history, and future. The discussion will be moderated by Camilla Andersson-Hjemdahl and Anders Hjemdahl, managers of the interview project “No Boundaries.” The aim of the project, a collaboration with Stanford Libraries, is to create and preserve video interviews with Estonian entrepreneurs in the San Francisco Bay Area and others who have contributed to Estonia’s e-services. The exhibition will be opened by Estonian-American filmmaker and the author of the film “Singing Revolution” James Tusty. The opening event is part of the program of a major Baltic studies conference “The 2018 AABS Conference at Stanford University: The 100th Anniversary of Baltic Independence” taking place on the Stanford campus from June 1–3 and featuring around 130 academic sessions, four keynotes, and several cultural events.

A travelling exhibit by the Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom is arriving in Toronto. The enormous over 500 square metre exhibit will be displayed in four large cities in North America to celebrate Estonia 100 with communities of Estonians abroad and local residents.
The formal exhibit opening will be on Saturday, September 29 at 7pm. Sander Jürisson (Vabamu), Piret Noorhani (VEMU), and Andres Kasekamp (University of Toronto) will speak. A small reception to follow at Tartu College.
THE EXHIBIT PAVILION WILL BE ON DISPLAY FROM SEPTEMBER 28/OCTOBER19, 2018, including during the cultural festivals Ontario Culture Days and Nuit Blanche.
We look forward to having you join the Boston Estonian Society and friends welcoming this unique and fantastic installation which has traveled from Estonia to be with us during this Centennial year of Estonia’s independence. The exhibit arrived at Stanford University, traveled to Toronto and now will be arriving in Boston en route to Washington, D.C.
