“We wanted to find a place in the Netherlands, which would be reminiscent of Estonia to all local Estonians,” Margit Tera, member of the board of the Estonian House in the Netherlands said. “Now we have the Estonia 100 oak grove, where we, and future generations, can celebrate important Estonian holidays and observances, such as the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia,” Tera added.
The oak trees were planted in Park 21, which is still being developed and is located approximately 10 km from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. The Estonia 100 oak grove is the gift of the Estonian House in the Netherlands and local Estonians in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia.
“It is really moving to witness how Estonian communities abroad are planting our sacred trees as a gift for Estonia’s centenary. Now we await May, when ”Estonia’s 100 oak” parks will be planted in Estonia,” Mari Valgepea, project manager of “Estonia’s 100 oaks” said. “Schoolchildren began growing trees from acorns they had collected in 2013, but everyone else who is interested can get oak seedlings for planting in May,” Valgepea added.
All schools, citizens, families, companies and organisations, both in Estonia and abroad, are awaited to plant their oak or oak grove on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia. The planting of oaks across Estonia will take place in the first two weeks of May, with most oak groves being opened on 1 June.
